How We Can Help During Nesting:

Nesting is an activity carried out by expectant mothers in the animal kingdom to prepare their environment for the arrival of their offspring. As mammals human beings also have this instinct and feel the strong, often sudden, urge to clean, organize, and prepare the home for the arrival of a baby.

Before you begin to read our article on the science behind nesting, it is important to understand that it is completely ok to be an expectant mother that has not felt the need to nest. Every mother is unique and special and everyone’s pregnancy experience is different, as long as you are healthy and relaxed then that is all that matters.

The most important thing is to not push yourself too hard which is where we come in. At Elite Care and Housekeeping we are here to offer a helping hand in preparing your home for your new arrival. From deep cleaning, to assisting with furniture building to meal planning, anything you need we are here for you.

Although all mothers are unique and beautiful it is most common for the nesting instincts to kick in during the final trimester of the pregnancy. However, as each expectant mother is individual, it has been reported that these instincts can kick in even sooner, with some mothers beginning nesting as early as the second trimester. The most important thing to do is to ensure that you feel as relaxed as possible during your pregnancy so the best thing to do is communicate to those around you when you feel the need to begin nesting so that they can support you.

Nesting is often associated with a surge of energy, even if you’re feeling fatigued overall. You might feel unusually motivated and eager to tackle projects such as organising your home and cleaning spaces you are not typically interested in.

It has been reported that mothers felt hyper-focused on tasks that are only directly associated with their baby’s arrival. Such as; packing a hospital bag, setting up the nursery, stocking up on supplies and even preparing food to eat during recovery after the birth.

Because of this hyper-focused behaviour, you may find that you begin to selectively socialise with friends or family and spend more time at home finishing your preparations. This is completely natural, but please do not completely isolate yourself especially as a solo-parent so that the preparation does not feel too overwhelming. Your friends and family are here to support you.

It is important to communicate the level of support you need during nesting with those around you. Some mothers have reported that due to the amount of tasks that they wanted to complete during nesting it began to cause them feelings of anxiety as it felt overwhelming. It is very important to manage your stress levels during this special time to make sure that you and your baby are healthy. So communicating your feelings to those around you, taking breaks between tasks, and practicing relaxation techniques is vital.

The key with nesting is to ensure you remain calm and relaxed, this means not attempting to take on any tasks that could cause you stress or harm. The best thing to do is to sit down when your instincts start to kick in and create a list of things that you feel need to be completed. Then prioritise the list into what you feel needs to be completed first versus what can be completed last, such as beginning with light cleaning and then building the furniture last.

The next thing to do is to delegate tasks, remember that you are not alone and you have people around you who are there to help. Leave the smaller tasks to you such as deciding the layout of your nursery or light cleaning, and leave the heavier tasks to those around you such as moving furniture or lifting heavy objects. This is where we can help, we are here to help you with preparing during nesting. We can help with clearing out clutter, deep cleaning, re-organising your spaces, meal planning, errand running and even walking your dog for you.

Ensuring that you come home to a stress-free environment after bringing your bundle of joy into the world will help you to remain calm and relaxed during recovery.

Something that can often be forgotten is stocking up on supplies and meal planning. Ensuring that you have basic supplies ready for your return to home such as nappies, baby wipes, toiletries for showering, washing machine tablets and softeners. Create a meal plan that will last you a month after returning home so that you can prioritise all of your energy on your recovery and bonding with your baby. Once created, assign a close family member to go grocery shopping for you on your due date so that you come home with a full fridge of food to eat. We can assist you with this as well as meal preparation.
